BUDS SCHOOL Veliyannoor
As part of Kerala's transformation into a disability-friendly state, the first of the 100 BUDS Schools announced by the state government was inaugurated and began functioning on July 13, 2018, at Poovakkulam in Velliyannoor Grama Panchayat by the Minister for Local Self Government, Dr. K. T. Jaleel.
BUDS Schools ensure education and care for individuals with physical and intellectual challenges. This school provides children with scientific educational activities and integrated services. Facilities such as physiotherapy and speech therapy are also available. The school is led by the BUDS Special School Development Management Committee, which includes elected representatives and volunteers.
Services provided from the center include surveys for the early identification of disabilities, health check-ups, awareness programs, distribution of assistive devices, counseling, guidance, and referral services. Children also receive snacks, nutritious food, medicines, and medical treatment through these centers.
A vigilance committee functions here to prevent rights violations and abuse against persons facing disabilities. Since February 22, 2024, the BUDS School in Velliyannoor has been operating in a renovated building with enhanced facilities.
