The Grama Panchayat is preparing this Biodiversity Register in recognition of the fact that biodiversity conservation and sustainable development in Veliyannoor Grama Panchayat are interrelated. Biodiversity is one of the pillars of sustainable development. The richness and diversity of life in our locality are made possible through the protection of the ecosystems on which we depend: clean water, food, shelter, medicine, clothing. Biodiversity is under severe threat from numerous factors, including the destruction and fragmentation of ecosystems, overexploitation of natural resources, spread of harmful species, pollution, and climate change. As human pressure on the environment has increased, biodiversity has declined.
By conserving biodiversity, we not only ensure that our surroundings remain rich and more diverse, but also improve the quality of human life. It is our responsibility to safeguard the resources that sustain us. Awareness of the problems and how to address them is essential for biodiversity conservation. Awareness must also be created among the general public. This local-level Biodiversity Register is being prepared with emphasis on the goal of “Biodiversity Conservation and Sustainable Development”.
